Dongfang Hospital is the second clinical medical college affiliated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, which is included in the national "Double First-Class" construction program for higher education institutions. The hospital is governed directly by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine（TCM）. The Hospital is a tertiary first-class Chinese medicine hospital specializing in traditional Chinese medicine, and outstanding advantages in integrated diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese and Western medicine. Dongfang Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is among the first batch of national TCM clinical research bases, designated as a hospital for regional medical center outreach, a fostering unit for national traditional Chinese medicine inheritance and innovation centers, a construction unit for the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine's traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation centers, a base for national physician qualification practical skills examination and examiner training, a national clinical trial institution for traditional Chinese medicine new drugs, an ethics review platform for traditional Chinese medicine clinical research, a base for standard research and promotion of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a base for national stroke screening and prevention, a base for national traditional Chinese medicine epidemic prevention and control, a base for key traditional Chinese medicine processing technology inheritance of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a base for the integration of Chinese and Western medicine in tumor treatment of Beijing international science and technology cooperation, and a base for the research on chronic diseases based on the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease in Beijing international science and technology cooperation.

Dongfang Hospital located in Beijing comprises one main facility and two other hospital areas, with a total of 1377 authorized beds. 

It encompasses nine key disciplines recognized by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including TCM Ophthalmology, TCM Otolaryngology, TCM Gynecology, TCM Cerebropathy, integrated Chinese and Western clinical medicine, TCM Pediatrics, TCM Proctology, TCM Peripheral Vascular Disease, and TCM rheumatology. Among them, TCM Cerebropathy and Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Gastroenterology are two national key discipline construction projects under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 

It also encompasses:

-- two "Double First-Class" disciplines at the university level, i.e. Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology, and TCM Otolaryngology; 

-- two national regional traditional Chinese medicine (specialist) diagnosis and treatment centers, i.e. Pediatrics and Cerebropathy; 

-- six national clinical key specialties, including TCM Cerebropathy, Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory and Fever Disease, Gynecology, and Nursing; 

-- fourteen key specialties designated by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, such as Oncology, Peripheral Vascular Diseases, Nephrology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, and Preventive Medicine; 

-- and fourteen key specialties and diagnosis and treatment centers designated by the Beijing Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Administration, such as the Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Massage, proctology, and clinical pharmacy.

In 2024, nine traditional Chinese medicine advantage specialties were designated by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including TCM Cerebropathy, Pediatrics, Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation, Preventive Medicine, and Nursing. 

The Beijing Municipal Traditional Chinese Medicine Administration awards the following five key specialties in the first batch, including: Gynecology (leading and surpassing class); Oncology, Pediatrics, Dermatology (surpassing class); Cardiology (construction class). The following five specialties were awarded in the second batch: Otolaryngology (leading and surpassing class); Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Otolaryngology (demonstration class), Respiratory department (surpassing class); Rheumatology department (catching up class).

Dongfang Hospital's branches in Qinhuangdao and Zaozhuang have been listed respectively in the fourth and fifth batches of national regional medical center construction units.

As of the end of June 2024, Dongfang Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has 1738 staff members, including 354 experts with senior titles, 6 renowned Chinese medicine masters, 14 national tutors for the inheritance of academic experience of national veteran TCM experts, 2 chief scientists of the national key research and development programs, and 169 supervisors for master's and doctoral students.

Dongfang Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is rooted in the East and oriented towards the world. As the second clinical medical college of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, it takes the lead in collaborating with the top 50 universities in the world to offer undergraduate education in traditional Chinese medicine. Since 2005, it has jointly cultivated "Traditional Chinese Medicine-Biology" dual bachelor's degree students with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and more than 500 international students have graduated from the program. The Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Russian Traditional Chinese Medicine Center, which was founded in St. Petersburg, has successfully obtained the qualification of the Russian Federation medical institution and has become the first traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Russia to be included in the national medical insurance system.
